Parking Information – Todi Historical Center

Todi is a beautifully preserved medieval hill town, one of the most elegantly designed and well preserved hill towns in all of Italy - a town that was built and inhabited long before cars were invented, a town that prospered for many, many centuries without cars. Everything in the center (centro storico) is easily accessible by foot and very difficult, almost impossible to access by car.

A car is not convenient in Todi centro, however, when we venture outside ‘the old walls’ we need our car to tour in the countryside and to arrive at other towns and villages. Below is valuable information regarding access and parking options in Todi. To view a printable PDF file CLICK HERE.

Park outside the wall at Porta Orvietana – there is a lift/elevator (ascensore) up to town:

1.This is the most convenient parking option for a day visit or, a longer term stay. The full day rate is about 6.50€ (no in/out privileges) and there is also an hourly rate of approximately 1€/hour. The lift is free and operates from 07h00 - midnight, 7 days per week throughout the year. When the lift is being serviced there will be a small bus to take you up to centro or from centro back down to the parking (parcheggio).

2.To enter the parking lot push the button and take the green token (gettoni), the gate will then open. Keep this token with you. Ride the lift (ascensore) to centro. Upon your return present the green token to the cashier (cassa), your parking fee will be displayed on the cashier screen and upon payment the validated token will be returned to you. Drive to the exit gate and deposit the token in the slot, the gate will open.

3.If you are staying in Todi you can ask the cashier for a one week pass (the rates are posted ~ 30€/week). You will prepay and be given a computerized pass card or paper receipt to present upon exit so you can enter/exit for the flat weekly fee. At the end of your stay, please return the card to the cashier.

Park at Santa Maria della Consolazione, the domed church at the entrance road to centro.

1.The parking entrance is west/behind the church. This is free parking and the walk up the main road to the piazza is about 10 minutes, it's a pleasant walk, with sidewalk and not too steep. Please note that we recommend you park at the ascensore as paying for the parking supports the maintenance of the ascensore and the parking infrastructure which is so important.

Parking in Centro Storico – not recommended but good to know:

1.Blue striped spaces are metered parking, 0.65€ per half hour, maximum 2 hours. You purchase your ticket at the nearby meter machine and place the ticket on your dashboard. The 2 main parking areas are in front of the big church with the steeple (San Fortunato) and Piazza Garibaldi just next to the main piazza. The parking is free for 2 hours over the lunch period and also from 20h00 to 0800. So an option if you are staying in centro and return after midnight and wish to drive up - if you buy a 2 hour ticket after 20h00 it will cover you until 10h00 the following morning. If your ticket expires the fine is a minimum of 45€ and they monitor often. Yellow striped spaces or no lines at all - DO NOT PARK, yellow is for resident/permits, no lines means no parking! Heavy fines of +80€.

2.Prepaid parking coupons can be purchased at various stores and caffè in centro. Instructions for use are available on the coupon in English, French, German, and of course, Italian. Half hour or one hour tickets are available; of course the 2 hour maximum parking rule still applies.

ZTL – Zona Traffico Limitato - Restricted access to centro storico, the historic center.

1.Todi has implemented traffic control with the use of cameras as you will find in many other cities in Italy. It’s very simple; if you see a red light at the entrance you should not proceed as you will be fined a minimum of 85 €. Below are the standard restricted times but there can be ad hoc restrictions for a special event etc. so best to always note if the light is red or green.

Restricted times:
Every Sunday and public holiday – 09h00 – 20h00
Every Saturday and day prior to a public holiday – 15h00 – 20h00
Monday through Saturday – 07h00 -09h00 and 12h00 – 13h30 as this is the time for the school buses to enter Todi centro.

2.If the light is malfunctioning there will be a blockade on the road, do not enter as when you arrive at the top a policeman will be obliged to give you a ticket for not respecting the police blockade.

3.HOW CAN YOU ENTER CENTRO DURING RESTRICTED HOURS?
Park at Porta Orvietana parking lot and take the ascensore/elevator as noted above
Park at Santa Maria della Consolazione and walk up as noted above

We thank you for respecting the preservation of this historically important town. Our objective is to make your visit to Todi safer and more enjoyable. Your observations and recommendations are welcome and appreciated.

Grazie!
